Refractive Surgery

The idea behind refractive surgery is to adjust the way the eye refracts (or bends) light. As light enters the eye it should come into focus on the retina (the back part of the eye responsible for sending images to the brain). With refractive disorders of the eye, light can come into focus before the retina (nearsightedness or myopia), behind the retina (farsightedness or hyperopia), and/or at multiple points on the retina (astigmatism).

When the light entering the eye does not come to a point in the correct spot on the retina, a blurred image is sent to the brain. Just like adjusting a camera with an image out of focus, a surgeon can change the way the light enters the eye to help bring your world into focus.
