November is Diabetic Eye Disease Month.  Diabetes can cause a group of eye disorders all of which can lead to vision loss or even blindness.  If you are at risk of diabetes or have been diagnosed with diabetes, your eyes will need to be examined on a regular basis to help detect diseases such as diabetic retinopathy, cataracts, or glaucoma.  The National Eye Institute (National Institutes of Health) provides more Facts About Diabetic Eye Disease.  Learn more.

Eyes of Hope...Looking Out for Eyes Around the World

Baker Eye Institute is now helping others around the world by partnering with VSP's Eyes of Hope eyewear donation program.  More than one billion people around the world need eyeglasses but can't afford them.  A gift of donated eyeglasses can change the lives of those in need.  Seeing clearly for the first time means they can do basic things like succeed at school or work, and care for their families.  Eyes of Hope, VSP Vision Care's eyewear donation program, is an easy way you can help.

Please look for the donation box in our lobby, or call for more information, 501-329-3937, ext. 2.

Astigmatism Correction with Cataract Surgery

Baker Eye Institute in Conway, AR uses the lastest technology to help reduce the need for glasses following cataract surgery.  Astigmatism is a very common refractive error in patients with cataracts.  Normal lens implants provide correction for either up-close or distance vision, but do not correct for astigmatism.  Improvements in technology have allowed surgeons like Dr. Baker to provide premium toric intraocular lens implants (IOLs) or corneal limbal relaxing incisions (LRIs) to help improve visual results for patients with astigmatism.

January is Glaucoma Awareness Month

Glaucoma is a silent illness; most people have no early symptoms and do not notice as their peripheral vision diminishes or blind spots occur. The disease affects more than 2.3 million Americans age 40 and older. Another 2 million do not know they have the disease. January is Glaucoma Awareness Month, and we want to remind people that knowing your risk for the disease can save your sight.  If untreated, glaucoma ultimately results in blindness.
