Another way of performing refractive surgery is by removing the natural crystalline lens and replacing it with intraocular lens implant. This type of surgery is performed every day when patients undergo cataract surgery. The natural crystalline lens become clouded as we age. This clouded lens (or cataract) is removed and replaced with an intraocular lens implant (IOL). The IOL corrects your vision from inside the eye. The same procedure used to remove the cataract can also be performed to correct vision in people who do not have cataracts yet. In this case, the natural crystalline lens is removed before it becomes clouded. This procedure is referred to as a CLEAR LENS EXTRACTION or EXCHANGE (CLE). In certain instances this procedure would be used instead of LASIK to correct vision. Along with the decision to have CLE, the surgeon and patient must decide on the type of IOL that will be used following the procedure.
CLE is performed on an out-patient basis under intravenous sedation at Baker Ambulatory Surgery Center. Only one eye at a time will be corrected.

Toric lens implants help to correct distance vision and astigmatism, but reading glasses will be needed.
Multifocal lens implants are the latest in IOL technology and allow patients to see both near and far without glasses.
Monofocal (or standard) lens implants will correct vision for distance, but reading glasses will still be needed.
Dr. Baker will discuss with you the different vision treatment options available with these types of lenses based on your eyes and your lifestyle.
